STELLENBOSCH: PRIVATE ESTATE TASTINGS, THE BIRTHPLACE OF PINOTAGE & A 5 STAR SPA
NOMAD HOME WINE SERIES
NOMAD HOME: WINE SERIES
Nomad Home's Wine Series partners with winemakers, sommeliers and estates at the top of their craft to curate private tastings, bespoke dining and unforgettable days in the vineyards.
Our South Africa retreat takes you to Stellenbosch, the heart of the Cape Winelands and one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world, for a 3 night immersion into South African wine, food and hospitality.
Our home is Lanzerac, a 5 Star wine estate, hotel and spa in the Jonkershoek Valley. Founded in 1692, it is one of South Africa's oldest wine estates and the birthplace of Pinotage: the first bottle in the world was released here in 1959. A Cape Dutch manor house, 54 rooms and suites, seven pools, a spa with vinotherapy treatments, and a working cellar you can walk to from your room.
Over four days you'll be hosted at private tastings at the estates that made Stellenbosch's name, eat at the best tables in the Winelands, and do it all in the company of a handpicked group of founders, creatives and senior professionals.
Four Days in the Cape Winelands
-
Stellenbosch is the heart of the Cape Winelands and South Africa’s second oldest town, founded in 1679. An hour from Cape Town, it sits in a ring of mountains with vineyards running up every valley, oak-lined streets and whitewashed Cape Dutch houses at its centre.
This is where South African wine made its name: Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends from the mountain slopes, Chenin Blanc from old bush vines, and Pinotage, the country’s own grape, born here in the 1920s and first bottled at Lanzerac in 1959.
The food is as serious as the wine. The Winelands are home to some of the best restaurants in Africa, with chef’s tables on the estates themselves and a farm-to-table tradition that long predates the phrase.
March is the end of harvest: warm days, cool evenings, the cellars busy and the vineyards at their fullest.
-
Pinotage is South Africa's own grape, a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault created in Stellenbosch in 1925. For decades it was misunderstood. Today, in the right hands, it makes some of the most distinctive reds in the world: dark fruit, smoke and spice, and the structure to age.
We taste it where it started. A private cellar tour and Pinotage tasting at Lanzerac, the estate that released the first bottle in 1959, and a visit to Kanonkop, the family estate whose Pinotage put the grape on the world stage.
Alongside it, the wines Stellenbosch is famous for: Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends from the mountain slopes, old-vine Chenin Blanc, and Cap Classique, the Cape's answer to Champagne, at two of the valley's most beautiful modern estates.
Every tasting is private, hosted by the winemaker or cellar team, and nothing is rushed.
-
Stellenbosch is 45 minutes from Cape Town and its airport, which makes this the easiest retreat to build a longer trip around.
Come early or stay on for Table Mountain, the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay, the restaurants of the city and the Cape Peninsula down to Cape Point. March is late summer in the Cape: long days, warm sea and the best weather of the year.
We'll happily help you plan a few extra days in the city, recommend where to stay and eat, and arrange transfers so the retreat starts and ends wherever suits you.
-
Lanzerac is one of South Africa's oldest wine estates, founded in 1692 at the foot of the Jonkershoek mountains, five minutes from the centre of Stellenbosch. In 1959 it released the world's first commercially bottled Pinotage, and the cellar still makes it today.
The hotel is a 5 Star Cape Dutch manor house set in gardens and vineyards: 54 individually designed rooms and suites, seven pools, four restaurants and a tasting room, deli and wine shop on the estate.
The Lanzerac Spa has a heated indoor pool, steam room and sauna, and vinotherapy treatments built around the estate's own grapes. There is even a water sommelier.
A stay here is Winelands living at its most relaxed: breakfast on the terrace, a cellar tour before lunch, and the mountains turning pink at the end of the day.
Kella Chan: Your Host
Kella Chan: Founder of Nomad Home
Kella is the founder of Nomad Home and a WSET certified wine host who has led Nomad Home's wine retreats across Portugal, Italy and France.
South Africa has been on her list for years: a wine country with the quality of the Old World, the energy of the New, and prices that still let you drink the top of the range.
She'll be at every tasting and every dinner, and she picks the wines.
Private Tastings, Not a Classroom
This is not a classroom retreat. Over three nights you'll taste your way through Stellenbosch with the people who make the wine: a private cellar tour and Pinotage tasting at Lanzerac, a visit to Kanonkop, the estate that put Pinotage on the world stage, and tastings at two of the valley's most beautiful modern estates.
Between tastings there is lunch on the terrace at Delaire Graff, an afternoon in Lanzerac's spa, and a farewell dinner at one of the Winelands' best restaurants.
Mornings start late, evenings run long, and nothing is compulsory except dinner.
*Cape Town is 45 minutes away. We're happy to help you plan a few extra days in the city before or after the retreat.

Charlotte
CO-FOUNDER of HANDS London
My favourite thing about Nomad Home is being able to connect with a large group of people from all over the world. I usually make friends slowly but when you spend so much time with a group of people, you become extremely close very quickly. That has been rare in my adult life and something I’ll always treasure. I’ve made friendships that will last a lifetime - we have already planned a few meetups since.

Laurie
FOUNDER of Outsourceful
Running my own business can get lonely and repetitive at times so it was refreshing to be able to travel, cowork, and bounce ideas with a group of founders. Although many of us were from different countries, it was surprising how much we had in common. I’ve been to multiple Nomad Home events now and the London events were a great way to meet people in my home city. There are 4 of us that met that have already set up monthly dinners; we really left as a family.

Andrea
PRODUCT MARKETING MANAGER and CONTENT CREATOR
I’ve remote worked for 5 years and found that it’s been difficult to find people that love luxury travel and have a flexible lifestyle. Nomad Home has given me a community to grow together personally and professionally with, when I honestly didn’t realize I could make these deep of connections of my adult life. What’s better is I got to do it while wine tasting and dinner partying.
-

Jesse
CO-FOUNDER of BLA Design Group and FOUNDER of Adessa Visuals
I work a lot, which means I don’t have much time to get away, socialize, or plan travel itineraries. Nomad Home has made it easy for me to just show up, enjoy unique activities and dinner parties that are off the beaten path, and connect with interesting people working on cool projects I would have never met otherwise. It was even better that I got to do all of it while getting my work done.
